Sensory Integration for Preschool Children

Preschool children have the most wonderful imaginations and the most beautiful minds. Occupational therapy is important in this stage of a child’s life as it helps set them up for a successful school career.

Children may present as having difficulty in:

  • Sitting still on the carpet
  • Needing to move regularly
  • Missing instructions from their teacher
  • Struggling to focus

Children may present as having difficulty in:

  • Holding their pencil appropriately
  • Using scissors
  • Using zippers, buttons, shoelaces
  • Colouring in the lines
  • Drawing and tracing prewriting shapes
  • Not developing a hand dominance at an age-appropriate time
  • Avoiding tasks and games that require fine motor skills

Children may present as having difficulty in:

  • Coordinating their movements and may appear clumsy or uncoordinated
  • Children who struggle going up and down stairs at an age-appropriate time
  • Children who struggle to coordinating both sides of their body
  • Understanding the concept of right and left
  • Poor ball skills
  • Poor balance
  • Struggling to cross the midline of his or her body during play and school tasks
  • Avoids tasks and games that require gross motor skills

  • Recognising shapes
  • Copying shapes
  • Visual tracking
  • Locating objects or shapes among other objects or shapes
